What You Can Expect.

Psychotherapy.

I strive to create an environment that feels non-judgmental, safe, and comfortable. I work alongside you in the therapy, guiding you to your conclusions with thought-provoking questions and comments, rather than telling you what decisions are best for you. Working in that manner helps you build confidence in yourself, trust in your gut, and have strength in your decisions. While the latter approach may be tempting, that style of therapy will lead you to always look outside of yourself for the answers and not produce long-standing change.

In my approach to therapy, I want to provide relief from those symptoms that prompted you to start this journey. While providing some tools to help give symptom relief, we may also look deeper into the issues to identify potential root causes. People often do not realize their current discomfort is part of a long-standing, unhelpful, and unhealthy pattern of relating to oneself, the world, and others. I want to help heal some of those deeper hurtful patterns, so you feel mentally stronger and more able to handle whatever life throws your way.

During the first session, background information will be gathered, including present circumstances and what you would like to focus on. You will do most of the talking, with me asking questions along the way to guide the session. At the end of that first session, I’ll talk to you about what I see, how I think I can help, and what happens after the first session. Weekly therapy is usually recommended, but medication management, a medical evaluation, substance abuse help, or more intensive treatment services may be recommended as well.

Medication Management.

Many people are apprehensive about psychiatric medications, so I hope to clarify the facts and reduce any fears about psychiatric medications.

To determine what psychiatric medications might be most effective, we will discuss your specific symptoms and previous treatments. We will review your medical history and lifestyle factors such as use of caffeine and alcohol, exercise and nutrition. The frequency of our sessions will be monthly after starting a new medication and every 3 to 4 months when symptoms, medications and dosages have stabilized. The goal is to define the problem, determine if medications can help and, if so, what medication would be best for you.

Prior to scheduling an initial consultation visit, we can speak by phone or communicate through email to determine if my practice is a good fit for you. You can reach me at 616-202-1195 or email me at lauriearnswald@psychgr.com.
